Local Dog Ordinances
**** Livingston County is currently conducting a dog census****
Livingston County residents are required by law to obtain a license for their dog(s) each year. The current year licenses are sold from December 1st thru February 28th. For example, the 2003 license will be available beginning December 1, 2002 thru February 28, 2003. Dog licenses may be purchased from the local township/city, Livingston County's Animal Shelter or Livingston County Treasurer's Office. Any license purchased after the February 28th date will be considered "delinquent" and will be charged a late fee. A delinquent license must be purchased through either the Livingston County Animal Shelter or the Livingston County Treasurer's Office. For residents of Deerfield, Tyrone, Genoa, Hamburg or Green Oak Townships, delinquent licenses are also available at the Township Hall.
Licenses issued by the Livingston County Treasurer's Office may be purchased in person or by mail. The documents needed to obtain a license are: a current rabies certificate, and proof of spay/neuter if applicable.
(State law mandates that these documents be presented each year.)
To purchase the license by mail, enclose the needed documents, along with a check made payable to Livingston County Treasurer, and mail to:
200 E. Grand River
Howell, MI 48843
Once processed, the documents will be returned to you, along with a receipt and the new tag.

I lost my current dog tag. What do I do?
The Livingston County Treasurer's Office will replace your tag for $1.00 as long as the rabies vaccination is current.
At what age do I have to license my puppy?
This is typically done between 4-6 months old. This is the age at which the first rabies vaccination is usually given. The license may be obtained once the rabies requirement is fulfilled.
I just got a new dog. What do I do about a license?
If the license is purchased within 30 days of the date you obtained the dog, the late fees will be waived. If purchased anytime after the 30-day period, the "delinquent fee" will apply.
Who do I contact about a kennel license?
Please contact your local township/city.
